About the Climate Crisis and its Stabilization from a Sustainability Sociologist

Climate Stabilization

11/3/2023

At the current CO2 emissions rate some six years are left to keep global heating at 1.5 degree Celsius. Even climate scientists are sounding the alarm and start using strident language of climate emergency according to a recent article in the Washington Post.[1] Governments, business, and civil society are playing a dangerous game that may threaten even modern civilization rather than only the Earth’s atmosphere. This dangerous predicament should force each of the nearly 8 billion humans to become aware of the need not only for increased renewable energy technologies but new social system thinking and action.

One of those social system approaches in dealing with the climate that, unfortunately, has been mostly ignored, is the concept and strategy for monetary transformation where the unjust, unsustainable, and therefore, unstable international monetary system is transformed by the adoption of the decarbonization standard of a specific tonnage of CO2e per person and an international monetary architecture with its UN Peoples' Bank.
At this webpage you will find my observations and activities at the Rio Earth Summit in July 1992, the Cancun Climate Conference in 2010, and submissions to Rio +20, COPs (Conference of the Parties to the Rio Earth Summit) 26 and 28 that took place in Glasgow and Dubai. Note that the earliest conference in Rio and the two dozen plus of conferences are organized by the Secretariat of the UNFCCC where FC stands for Framework Convention and where CC, of course, stands for Climate Change. The proposed Tierra international monetary system with itsdecarbonization-based monetary standard is also a framework which is called the TTRIMS monetary sustainability framework where TTRIMS stands for the Tierra TRansformed International Monetary System. The hope is that the TTRIMS framework becomes the framework convention where nations pushed by civil society agree on the major structures and processes of the new transformed monetary system which in turn will transform the other three subsystems of the world economy. Thus, the decarbonization-basedinternational monetary system would be accompanied by a money-based financial system, an inequality-reducing fiscal system, and UN Peoples' Bank-regulated commercial system. Remember that the monetary system is called “First among equals” or Primus inter pares and thus influences the other three subsystems of the world economy.

Important part of this climate webpage is its relationship with the 1944 Bretton Woods UN Conference on Monetary and Financial Issues. This website and its 2024 eponymous book consider the fundamental changes needed now are of the same or even larger magnitude than those faced by the 44 nations in 1944.

Details of this transformational Bretton Woods 3.0 can be found in Verhagen 2012″The Tierra Solution: Resolving the Climate Crisis through Monetary Transformation”, https://transformmoney.org and, at the end of this month, at www.transformingtheworldeconomy.org.
